Croquet

Croquet

Dating back to the days of Nathanial Greeley, and the first meetings of the WVAIA, in 1888, croquet has been a part of our organization. The court, situated off Snows Mountain Road, between the tennis courts and the golf course, with a fabulous view of the valley walls to the west, is on the former site of the old Snow Mountain swimming pool, where Hans Rey used to swim each morning of the non-snow season; and in the winter, the children played hockey and skated there. The season begins in July and runs through the summer, every Sunday afternoon at 3PM. Play normally lasts two hours, and is accompanied by potluck drinks and nibbles. The season concludes on Labor Day, at which time everyone wears the traditional white clothing [the rest of the summer, whites are not the norm] The course will be set up by 2:45 for practices and the games will begin promptly at 3:00 and end at 5:00. Bring a beverage of your choice for personal use and a snack to share. We request that participants be a member of the WVAIA. No prior sign up is required. Just come and enjoy the fun!

Hiking

Hiking Trails

WVAIA will seasonally offer guided hikes, each led by one or two experienced hikers. These hikes will be announced via one or more of the WVAIA social media channels and will include a brief description of the trail, required equipment (if any) as well as distance and difficulty.

Trail Maintenance

As a “Cooperator” with the United States Forest Service [USFS], we assume responsibility for the Level One maintenance of the oldest network of hiking trails in the northeast. Level One work consists of clearing blow-downs, cleaning-out drainage, blazing, signage, and cutting-back the encroaching forest growth. We also work with the USFS on Level Two projects, such as stone stairways, retaining walls, wooden ladders, bridges, and other special projects designed to conserve the beautiful resources of the White Mountain National Forest. Level One and Level Two work is addressed with a combination of volunteer and professional labor. Off the Beaten Path, a professional trail building company, out of Turner Maine, manages our Level One “trail Patrol,” and is the contractor of choice for the WVAIA on our Level Two projects. We sponsor four Trails Days a year, at which volunteers get together for a rewarding day in the woods, tending the trails, often doing Level One work, and at times, getting involved with special projects.
